Carlos G. Juan
«Ramón y Cajal» Senior Research Fellow
Carlos G. Juan was born in Petrer, Spain, on July 2, 1991. He received the MSc degree in telecommunication engineering and the PhD degree in electronics engineering from Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), Elche, Spain, in 2014 and 2019, respectively, where he joined the Neuroengineering Biomedical (nBio) Research Gruop as a Research Fellow.
Since 2014, he has been a Research Fellow with the nBio Research Group, Department of Systems Engineering and Automation, UMH. He was a Visiting Researcher with the Lab-STICC Group, Université de Bretagne Occidentale, Brest, France, in 2016 and 2018. During 2019–2020 he was an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Materials Science, Optics and Electronic Technology, UMH. He held several Postdoctoral Research Fellowships with Lab-STICC, Université de Bretagne Occidentale, Brest, France (2020–2021), Medical Robotics Group, University of Málaga, Málaga, Spain (2022) and Technical University of Cartagena, Cartagena, Spain (2023–2024). Since September 2024 he is a «Ramón y Cajal» Senior Research Fellow with the Institute of Bioengineering, UMH. His main research interests include microwave engineering, antenna and propagation, instrumentation electronics and sensors applied to bioengineering. His research work is focused on non-invasive dielectric characterization of biological tissues, with an especial emphasis on the development of non-invasive microwave-based sensors for the detection of glucose concentration in aqueous and biological solutions.
Dr. Juan was a recipient of the CEA-Springer Award to the Best PhD Thesis in Bioengineering 2020, issued by the Spanish Committee in Automatic Control (CEA), as well as the Santander Bank Young Researchers Award 2022, issued by Santander Bank, Inc., and the Extraordinary Ph.D. Award 2022, issued by UMH, among other awards and distinctions. He authored the book Glucose Concentration Detection in Aqueous and Biological Solutions with Microwave Sensors: An Approach towards Non-invasive Glucose Sensing (Springer, 2021). He served as an Associate Technical Program Committee Chair at the IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) 2024. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. He has been recently appointed to serve as an IEEE I&M Distinguished Lecturer (2025–2027). Since 2015, he has authored more than 50 scientific publications.
